In a shocking incident during the Euro 2024 match between Scotland and Hungary, Hungarian footballer Barnabas Varga collapsed on the field after a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The game had to be paused for an extended period as Varga received urgent medical attention.
Varga was chasing a long cross into the area when Gunn came out to collect the ball late in the second half. The two players collided, and Varga immediately fell to the ground, struggling to move. Teammates and medical staff rushed to his aid, lying him on his side as more individuals arrived.
Screens were brought onto the field to shield Varga from view as his concerned teammates looked on. Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai appeared to be in tears as he consoled his stricken teammate. After a long delay, Varga was stretchered off the pitch by the medical staff.

The Hungarian Football Federation later stated that Varga's condition was stable and that he was taken to a hospital in Stuttgart. German broadcaster Magenta TV reported that Varga was conscious and talking when he arrived at the hospital.
Coach Marco Rossi said Varga suffered what appeared to be a facial fracture and would likely undergo a minor operation. It was a terrible moment for both teams, and Hungary dedicated their 1-0 win over Scotland to Varga.
The incident evoked painful memories of Christian Eriksen's collapse during Euro 2020, where Danish players formed a protective circle around him after he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch. Varga's injury is a serious blow to Hungary's hopes in the tournament, and his participation in the rest of Euro 2024 is now in doubt.
